Hiking around Perth

Yanchep National Park is just under an hour north of metropolitan Perth. We spontaneously embarked on the Yanchep Yaberoo Budjara Heritage Trail in the afternoon. The starting point for the hike is Lacey Road just off Wanneroo Road in Yanchep.

In December 2019, a bushfire burnt through 13,000 hectors across Two Rocks and into the Shire of Gingin over several days. After that, many trails in Yanchep were closed. Repairs are still ongoing and are expected to continue into the next year.

The Yaberoo Budjara Heritage Trail, a 28 km one-way track, was fortunately open when we got there. We only did a couple of hours of hiking at the time but plan to be back. Most of the track is crushed limestone, some detours take hikers over dunes and through sand.

All along the track, we saw many burnt sections from above mentioned fire, which looked eerie in the barren landscape. Standing on top of the dunes, one can even see sections of burnt and non-affected woodland right next to each other. Getting closer to the burnt sections, we noticed little green plants re-emerging – almost like life is making its way back after disaster struck. It’s a beautiful sight.
