Hiking around Perth
The next mini-post in my hiking series describes my favourite hike thus far. Kitty Gorge is a 16.5 km bushwalk accessible from the historic town of Jarrahdale, about an hour southeast of Perth. We went there one gorgeously sunny weekend in June. It’s actually a great idea to do this hike in particular in winter or after a substantial amount of rain, because the streams and waterfalls would have more water in them.
This hike through Kitty Gorge is overall relatively flat but at the same time it’s very versatile, which makes it popular for hikers and walkers of all levels. It starts off in the forest near the Jarrahdale Cemetry and follows the Serpentine River, featuring several smaller waterfalls before the stream widens into a larger basin.
After the basin, we got out of the forest and into an open plain, before descending to the stream again and finally getting to the beautiful Serpentine Falls.
It was nowhere near warm enough for a swim, but the pool looked inviting all the same, with steps leading into it. We gave it a miss and after spending some time admiring it, we returned back upstream where we had found a lovely spot for a lunch break in the sunshine. The water was crisp and clear, perfect to dip the toes in to cool them off.
We ended this perfect hiking day with a pint in the Jarrahdale Tavern, which features indoor and outdoor seating as well as fireplaces inside. We wished we had staid for the night but soon had to be on our way back to the city.
